"We have lift off" in the labor of transforming our family Learning Story

Before I was married to my children's mother I lived with midwives. Then I married a midwife and started a family with her. There is a saying among midwives when a woman has gone into labor and developed a steady pattern of labor with regular contractions to indicate the birth is imminent: "We have lift off."

In 2020 the global pandemic brought families closer than they had been for centuries. While their elders formed tribal groups with alternate versions of reality and how to respond to the challenges of the "new normal," the children watched. As the idea of the truth itself became subject the subject of suspicion, a new era of blind faith in authority figures and mass media manipulation emerged.

Fingers were pointed. Shame and blame made our collective trauma seem like a hopeless nightmare. Once the vaccine started to become available, families wanted to get back to normal when what they needed was a new way forward, a better version of themselves than they were before.

So let me tell you what is coming. I’m going to show you how to do an audacious thing with modesty. For those of you who have heard that humans only use a small percentage of their brain I want you to know that is far less tragic than the untapped potential of your heart.

Every day in America 4,000 children lose a parent in family court. This is where shame and blame has parents focusing on the worst in each other rather than the best in themselves and their children. The purpose of this blog is to encourage you to do something about this injustice and join me in using soul force principles, or what Gandhi called Satyagraha and Ahimsa (Truth-force and Non-violence), to see the beginning of the end of our broken family law system.

You can transform your family story, and turn a hopeless nightmare into a hopeful dream for the future. I am going to show you how anyone can take heart and start showing up in a different way for their family, because in the words of my oldest son when he was young, if you are a mom or dad you are going to be a mom or dad "a'ever." Your family is not broken. They will be there in the future. The future is waiting for you. Starting today, it's time to get the labor started. We have lift off.

In Praise of the Humble Hyphen

If she were still alive, my grandmother Mildred Joyce Webster Cole would have been 101 years old today.  I remember eating in a little diner with her after church in her adopted home of Reno, Nevada when I was not yet double-digits of age. As I recall, she had taken me to the store to purchase a card for my mother. We sat together at a booth in the diner while I wrote what I wanted to say. I misjudged the space available, and wouldn’t you know it I ran out of room to write an entire word in the space there was. Grandmother put me at ease and introduced me to a trick that I remember to this day, which was the use of a hyphen. It is Possible to Change Overnight

  I am feeling like there is nothing I can do. I look out my window to the world, and I look at the flowers blooming in our time, and I wonder. Am I able to really see the flowers for what they are, to experience the potential in each bud to release their fragrance? In the words of Bob Dylan,  “For them that must obey authority/ That they do not respect in any degree/ Who despise their jobs, their destinies/ Speak jealously of them that are free/ Cultivate their flowers to be/Nothing more than something they invest in.” I believe there is more to be experienced in the beauty of this spring day than what can be seen with the eyes, or experienced with the senses, but we have to start somewhere.
